What Are the Best Ways to Prevent Rodent Infestations?
Dealing with a rodent infestation? Squirrels, rats, and mice, all rodents that love being in our homes. Why wouldn't they? It's warm, it's dry, and they're steady sources of food and things to chew.
We, of course, do not love having rodents in our home. They're fire hazards because they take out electrical wires. They get trapped in the wall and die there, which means foul odors. They spread disease through urine and feces. They breed and breed and breed: where you see one there could be many more.
So preventing rodent infestations should be a huge priority for any homeowner. Here's what you need to know.
What attracts rodents to your house?
Ready access to food attracts many rodents. If you have pet food out, have unsecured trash, or don't clean up your dishes as often as you should then you could be attracting a rodent infestation.
They need water too, which means pet dishes, leaky faucets, leaky sprinklers, and other water sources bring them in droves.
They also like places to hide, which means they like clutter and debris a great deal.
Some rodents just take advantage of access. If you have rotten eaves, soffits, fascia or other problems then they can access them and use them to get into your attic.
What do rats hate the most?
Sorry, but all rodents are pretty resilient little critters. You're not going to drive them away with smells. Not even scary smells, like cat urine. Rats in particular are pretty smart and soon figure out that the smells can't hurt them, but the food can still feed them.
So if you want to get rid of rodents, the only way is to physically remove all of them, to take away the things that attract them, and to block off access to the spaces they're using to get into your home. You may have to declutter your home and do housework every day to ensure that they stay gone.
What do you do if you see a rat in your house?
Stay calm and call pest control. Don't chase the rat around with a broom, scream at the rat, or try to catch the rat and take it outside.
These are all good ways to get a rat bite or a rat scratch, which are the primary ways that the diseases these and other rodents carry get transmitted.
Once you've called pest control clean the house from top to bottom: there are likely to be germs everywhere!
