Where do Houston bats come from?
Although there are 11 species of bats that either reside or migrate through Houston, most bats that people will encounter in their Houston home or property are Mexican Free-Tailed bats. As the name suggests, they migrate back to Mexico to ride out winter in caves. However, if they find a suitable temperature/environment in one of our man-made structures they may not migrate and instead reside in Houston year-round.
Yes! Bats are protected by federal and state laws because they are deemed environmentally important. One bat can consume up to 1200 mosquito sized bugs in one hour. That’s almost 10,000 bugs a night. It is estimated that some of the largest colonies of these bats consume 250 tons of insects nightly! Although they are a great benefit to our environment, they are a nuisance when they enter our structures. Use only a licensed professional if you suspect a problem!
Guano is another term for bat excrement. It is similar in shape and size of mouse droppings and can be easily confused. Guano is easy to determine with a flashlight or other lighting means. If you crush it with a gloved hand and shine a light on the material left and it sparkles it is most likely guano. This is due to the exoskeletons of the insects that bats feed on nightly. Guano also has a smell often described as pungent, acrid or musty. It is often referred to as a smell that one will not forget.
Aside from the heavy smell left over from a bat colony guano itself can be harmful to humans and animals if left in a structure. Bats can carry histoplasmosis and it is transmitted in the lungs via spores after the guano is disturbed in some manner, typically through clean-up or even walking through it in an attic. Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection affecting the respiratory system and can be fatal. If the guano can be accessed or removed through a demolition process, it is recommended that it is removed or at least chemically treated.
Though it will be different based on each situation, average costs for dealing with a bat colony in a home ranges from $400 to over $9000 for very large or extensive infestations. Commercially, these costs can run even higher based on several factors such as the height of structures and accessibility. Bat removal can be tedious because it takes attention to detail to make sure every possible entry is sealed before the main entry areas have one-way valves installed to remove the animals and prevent them from entering a new spot. The clean-up portion can be equally challenging when it requires the removal of building materials to access the guano hidden where the bats resided.

Called them to get rid of a dead possum carcass in my backyard and they responded quickly and arrived timely efficient. Ms. Ashely went straight to work and got rid of everything that was presented. She's a trooper! Very kind, professional and a listener. I didn't expect them to send her i was a bit surprised lol but she knows exactly whats she doing. Only small downfall is the pricing but hey they do their job effectively and kept it professional.

Called several companies when I realized I had bats flying out of my roofline. Yeyser Cabrera returned my call on a Sunday and was quick to schedule an inspection. Communication was great throughout the process, which you can’t say about many companies these days. Yeyser was always on time for his service calls. Thankfully I called Elite Wildlife Services, and got to talk to Josh. He came out to offer a second opinion, and identified our issues straight away. He fixed the other company's mistakes (we spent a month with a different company trying to get rats out of our attic with little success), secured our home, successfully got rid of the rats, and saved my sanity! I had a problem with pests in the attic and called Elite Wildlife Services. They made it out to check on it the same day I called and quickly had a thorough analysis of my problem (raccoons and rats) after their inspection. Both Mark and Ashly were very knowledgeable and communicated the problems and solutions clearly and completely. Ashly did the work after I committed to having it done and was very thorough and efficient. She was easy to reach and to communicate with. All of the noises are now gone and the traps that were in the attic have shown no response for the past week. Problem solved, I'm sure!! I would heartily recommend these guys for any mammal pest problems you might have. Thanks guys! Great job.

A Huge Thank You to Guadalupe Martinez and His Team.

I reached out to Guadalupe on a Friday regarding a raccoon issue at my home. By Saturday morning, he was on-site and - within just five minutes - identified the hiding spot of a mother raccoon and her two babies. That same day, he set a trap and successfully captured the mother. He returned on Sunday to safely retrieve the two babies and transport them to a shelter.

A few days later, Guadalupe came back to thoroughly disinfect the affected area.

Called them on a Sunday afternoon after hearing raccoons in my attic and Mark, the owner, was at my house within an hour to inspect the damage. Mark found a pregnant raccoon nesting in a corner of my 3rd floor attic and proposed a plan of action to extricate the raccoon and to prevent this from happening again. Elite Wildlife Services had 3 men at my house the next morning and they completed the project by noon on Thursday. The guys were very professional and responsive and left my house raccoon free and sealed so that unwanted critters cannot nest here again.

Josh was very, very quick to reply to my late-night, online request for an inspection and he was at my house the next day, in the morning! (I prefer to work with companies that actually use modern methods of communication. So many still think the telephone between 8AM and 5PM is the only way to communicate.) Josh accessed the situation and thoroughly explained how he would solve the problem, the warranty and the cost. I agreed and then he started work immediately.
